How can I stay happy and healthy while working from home?
Many of us have embraced our new remote working life. Without the daily commute and requirement of a physical presence in the office for 9 hours a day, we’re enjoying a better work/life balance and reaping the benefits in terms of more time for improving our fitness, spending quality time with our loved ones and staying on top of life’s little niggles – like that sudden leak in the roof.
But how can we stay happy and healthy while working from home? We’ve asked HDUK’s Director of Happiness Debbie Cunliffe to share her top tips.
- Fresh air – always try and get out every day for some Vitamin D – even if it’s just a walk around the block. Spending time outdoors is scientifically proven to be beneficial for mental and physical health.
- Nutrition – this is a really important one as it’s so easy to keep snacking if you are at home, so keep meals/snacks strict and remember how brilliant heathy foods are for your mood and general wellbeing.
- Routine – stay in your usual working routine, get dressed as if you are going into the office and look presentable, no PJ’s!
- Exercise – a ten-minute workout first thing can set you up for the day, and is brilliant for mental health.
- Water – hydration will help you focus, is vital for your organs and great for your skin; drink it continually throughout the day and aim for at least two litres.
- Move – set an alarm every hour, and move, even if only for a few minutes – dance to a favourite track, jog on the spot or do some stretches – just don’t sit in the same spot for 8 hours!
- Smile – when we aren’t in the presence of other people, we don’t smile as much – smile therapy is great fun – smile 5 times, a proper big smile and it will make you feel happier 🙂
